The third son of the Bear Clan, Hale thought he had his life figured out. He had a stunning bride, his iron faith in the Mother, and has spent the last five years training to be the future clan leader. But when his life comes crashing down around him, Hale knows he can’t stay home.

Leaving behind everyone he’s ever known, Hale is alone with his thoughts as he crosses the Alderwood in search of his sister. Then Gemini—the clan flirt and known gossip—follows him, demanding his protection. She’s just as determined to leave her life behind. Hale doesn’t know what made her leave her sisters or suitor, but he has no choice but to continue with a helpless girl at his side. Neither ever expected just how dangerous the Alderwood could be.

Oblivious of Hale’s departure, Parson and Raene travel to Terrana to ask political favors in exchange for their clan leader’s freedom, but lingering injuries threaten their arrival—and their lives. They’ll need the help of an unlikely ally if they hope to succeed.

My Review

This is my first introduction to this series. I was worried having not read the prior two novels that I would get lost and not have as good an experience had I followed this series from the beginning. As I have experienced this before. Yet, I was able to truly jump right into this series. In fact, it felt like I had been with all of the characters from the beginning. It was so smooth to jump into this story and follow along with Hale and Gemini.

The shape shifting ability that each character possessed was great. There was of course the bears, which Hale was one. Then there was Gem who was a hare. There is also a tiger, elk, and falcon to name some others.

Although, back to Hale and Gem. Hale is a powerful protector, yet he could also show his tender side and even be put in his place by Gem. She may be a hare but she had lots of spunk. I loved Gem for her spunk. Again, having not read any of the other books, when the other characters voices and stories were told in this book, it felt natural. Additionally, they played roles in this story as a whole as well. I am a fan. I plan to grab the first two books to read until the fourth one is released. Hale and Gem forever.
