The Guineveres

Image
To four girls who have nothing, their friendship is everything: they are each other’s confidants, teachers, and family. The girls are all named "Guinevere"―Vere, Gwen, Ginny, and Win―and it is the surprise of finding another Guinevere in their midst that first brings them together. They come to The Sisters of the Supreme Adoration convent by different paths, delivered by their families, each with her own complicated, heartbreaking story that she safeguards; however, the girls are more than the sum of their parts and together they form the all powerful and confident "The Guineveres," bound by the extraordinary coincidence of their names and girded against the indignities of their plain, sequestered lives. Author Sarah Domet explores their almighty friendship as the desperate teens concoct a plan to escape from the isolated abbey.

Need You Dead

Image
Roy Grace, creation of the CWA Diamond Dagger award winning author Peter James, faces his most mysterious case yet in Need You Dead.

Lorna Belling, desperate to escape the marriage from hell, falls for the charms of another man who promises her the earth. But, as Lorna finds, life seldom follows the plans you’ve made. A chance photograph on a client’s mobile phone changes everything for her.

When the body of a woman is found in a bath in Brighton, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to the scene. At first it looks an open and shut case with a clear prime suspect. Then other scenarios begin to present themselves, each of them tantalizingly plausible, until, in a sudden turn of events, and to his utter disbelief, the case turns more sinister than Grace could ever have imagined.

My Review

Which, I have not read any of the other novels in this series, this book can be read as a stand alone novel. My reading experience did not really suffer from having been new to this series. I say …

All We Shall Know

Image
Melody Shee is alone and in trouble. Her husband doesn't take her news too well. She doesn't want to tell her father yet because he’s a good man and this could break him. She’s trying to stay in the moment, but the future is looming – larger by the day – while the past won’t let her go. What she did to Breedie Flynn all those years ago still haunts her.

It’s a good thing that she meets Mary Crothery when she does. Mary is a young Traveller woman, and she knows more about Melody than she lets on. She might just save Melody’s life.

Donal Ryan’s new novel is breathtaking, vivid, moving and redemptive.

My Review

I kind of struggled with this book. I thought the story was fine and in fact, I liked the way the author titled each chapter with the current week in Melody's pregnancy. At times I would find Melody talking to her unborn child about her fears and thoughts for her child. In fact, I was kind of starting to find my groove with the story but what really held me back from …

Vigilantes with Steven W. Kohlhagen

Image
America is experiencing a dramatic increase in terrorist attacks—by jihadists, white supremacists, and Mexican cartels. In the face of these failures by the U.S. Government, intelligence and law enforcement bureaucracies, a group of ad hoc vigilantes has exploded onto the scene. And, surprisingly, this shadowy and deadly vigilante group appears to be led by at least one of the U.S. Government's most senior and trusted Counterterrorism insiders. Is it the FBI's Counterterrorism head? The Army's Senior Special Ops' head? The CIA's? As the story careens full throttle in parallel between the thrilling action of the vigilantes' frequent murders of terrorists in the act and the attempts by investigators to discover the mystery of the rogues' identities, neither the reader, the President, nor the President's own investigators know the real identities of the vigilante leaders.

As they close in on the vigilantes, the murders—both terrorist and vigilante—ratchet u…

This is a Bust

Image
Set in New York’s Chinatown in 1976, this sharp and gritty novel is a mystery set against the backdrop of a city in turmoil Robert Chow is a Vietnam vet and an alcoholic. He’s also the only Chinese American cop on the Chinatown beat, and the only police officer who can speak Cantonese. But he’s basically treated like a token, trotted out for ribbon cuttings and community events. So he shouldn’t be surprised when his superiors are indifferent to his suspicions that an old Chinese woman’s death may have actually been a murder. But he sure is angry. With little more than his own demons to fuel him, Chow must take matters into his own hands. Rich with the details of its time and place, this homage to noir will appeal to fans of S.J. Rozan and Michael Connelly.

January 20, 1976. The Hong Kong-biased newspaper ran an editorial about how the Chinese who had just come over were lucky to get jobs washing dishes and waiting tables in Chinatown. Their protest was making all Chinese people look b…

My Review

While, this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone book. In the beginning I was really feeling the groove between Althea and Landon. The way they first met when they were younger was sweet. In fact, I loved the way the author portrayed Landon before he became Alpha as a geeky guy with a kind heart. There are so many werewol…
