Missing Isaac

There was another South in the 1960s, one far removed from the marches and bombings and turmoil in the streets that were broadcast on the evening news. It was a place of inner turmoil, where ordinary people struggled to right themselves on a social landscape that was dramatically shifting beneath their feet. This is the world of Valerie Fraser Luesse's stunning debut, Missing Isaac.

It is 1965 when black field hand Isaac Reynolds goes missing from the tiny, unassuming town of Glory, Alabama. The townspeople's reactions range from concern to indifference, but one boy will stop at nothing to find out what happened to his unlikely friend. White, wealthy, and fatherless, young Pete McLean has nothing to gain and everything to lose in his relentless search for Isaac. In the process, he will discover much more than he bargained for. Before it's all over, Pete--and the people he loves most--will have to blur the hard lines of race, class, and religion. And what they discover about…

My Review

It has been a long time since I have read an Agatha Christie book. In anticipation of wanting to check out this movie, I decided to pick up a copy of the book to read. I enjoyed it. Detective Hercule is a smart man. I thoroughly enjoyed this about him. There is nothing worse then a dumb detective. He did not let anything escape him, even the smallest details.

There is a bevy of intriguing characters. This book reads kind of like the board game Clue. Which, if you are a fan of mysteries, you will enjoy this aspect. While, I did like the many different characters and the fact that they did not get muddied within the story. Yet, I never fully embraced the characters. To be honest, the plot was alright. A nice cozy …

It was 1961, before the deaths of JFK and MLK, before Vietnam. IndieReader calls their adventure out of adolescence into the beginning of responsibility: "A must read not only for the baby boomer generation, but great commentary on friendship, mental illness and, ultimately, the road towards redemption."

My Review

Although, I was not born in the sixties, I did feel as if I had been transported back to the sixties with Mr. Livingston's writing.

Lee and Dango were kind of an odd couple in the sense that Lee was more grounded and Dango was a free spirit. Yet, they balanced each other out as best friends do. The wild journey that these two took was entertaining. Traveling to many different places and meeting interesting people. There were good times and there were bad times and e…
