A fantastical reimagining of the American West which draws its influence from steampunk, the American western tradition, and magical realism The world is only half made. What exists has been carved out amidst a war between two rival factions: the Line, paving the world with industry and claiming its residents as slaves; and the Gun, a cult of terror and violence that cripples the population with fear. The only hope at stopping them has seemingly disappeared—the Red Republic that once battled the Gun and the Line, and almost won. Now they’re just a myth, a bedtime story parents tell their children, of hope. To the west lies a vast, uncharted world, inhabited only by the legends of the immortal and powerful Hill People, who live at one with the earth and its elements. Liv Alverhyusen, a doctor of the new science of psychology, travels to the edge of the made world to a spiritually protected mental institution in order to study the minds of those broken by the Gun and the Line. Billionaire John Boyer has the perfect life…a wonderful wife, son and lots and lots of money. John leaves on a business trip only to be called back urgently. Child pedophile, Felix Flowers is released from prison. The first place Felix goes to right away is John’s home. Sadly, John’s son, Jonathan is murdered at the hands of Felix. Felix is deemed insane and sent away to a mental hospital until he can stand trial. John is sickened by the court systems and hires Kane Silver and his team to help him bring justice. 187 When Courts Fail is the third Kane Silver novel. Kane is like Rambo and the Punisher all rolled into one. So far I have to say that this book is the most violent of the three novels. Though, it is easy to understand why as the subject matter of this book is a hard one to swallow. I was cheering for Kane and his crew for helping to bring justice where it belongs. Be prepared to crave out some time to read this book as you will track of time. 187 When Courts Fail brings a big

Good Morning, Darkness

Review by Nancy Laura Finnegan had it made. She had a great job in a financial institution, good friends and a man who loved her. Actually, he stalked her when she tried to break up with him. He scared her to the point she took a self-defense class taught by an off-duty cop. So, when two arms wash up at two different sites on the Malibu coast, there are those who believe they belong to Laura. No one can find her, her “ex” moved her furniture and clothing out of her rental and supposedly stored them for her but, in fact; they were sold. Scott Goodsell was the ex and found nothing wrong with his actions. Women were stupid, they loved him, and when he left they were heartbroken. Raised by a “unique” mother, Scott always got his way with mom – although he usually paid for it later when her mood changed. His sisters hated him, conspired against him and there never was peace in his mother’s house. The newest item of contention is the ring his grandmother gave him: a family heirloom that he

Review by Nancy (my fellow reviewer and good friend) She literally bowled him over. But, in her defense, she didn’t know who he was at the time. Linnea Larson is the hometown girl made good. The star of her family’s theatre productions; cute (beautiful), nice, a good friend and a very bored woman if the truth were known. Luke, the movie star; rich kid, nice, good friend, hasn’t been on stage in a loooonnnnnggggg time is trying so hard to do a good job in Guys and Dolls that he falls fast and hard for his co-star. Unfortunately, he forgets that Minnesota isn’t West L.A. and his autographing, playing to the crowds, etc. don’t go over on a date nearly as well here. Through many miscommunications, affairs interrupted (by her MOM!) and trying to put on a good production of a favorite show and both their best friends interfering; somehow the two manage some personal time and we see if they can both adjust to how THEY want their lives to be! This is a nice book. By nice, I mean there isn’t an

Draculas

This story takes place in Durango, Colorado. Mortimer Moorecook has been anxiously awaiting a package. When the Fedex man arrives, Mort gets really excited. Mort ordered a skull. Though the skull is not just any normal skull. It is a “Dracula skull”. Shanna specializes in the evolution of primates. Mort hired Shanna. He wants her to research and figure out the history behind the “Dracula skull”. In her research, Shanna found some interesting information regarding the Wallachian Order of the Dragon and its founder, Oswald von Wolkenstein. Supposedly Oswald’s son had a birth defect that affected his teeth, which might account for the long incisors. Mort suffers an attack and is rushed to Blessed Crucifixion Hospital. There Dr. Kurt Lanz examines Mort. Soon, there is a outbreak of vampires. Can anyone stop them before it is too late? Draculas by Blake Crouch, Jack Kilborn, Jeff Strand, and F. A storm is a brewing in...The Mullah's Storm!

Major Michael Parson is co-piloting a C-130 Hercules across Afghanistan. The crew is transporting a highly dangerous and valued Taliban Mullah prisoner. Things were going just fine until they were shoot at by a oncoming missile. The C-130 is shot down. Help is on the way but it a long way a ways. Now it is up to Major Parson and Master sergeant Gold, an interpreter to transport the prisoner across the snowy plains of enemy territory to safety. It will be one of Major Parson’s most dangerous missions. He and Gold had better hope and pray that the Taliban insurgents don’t find them of they will wish they were dead like the rest of the C-130 crew. The Mullah’s Storm is Mr. Young’s debut novel. The adrenaline/intensity levels in this book were insane…they were off the charts. The dynamics between Parson and Gold were good. Both Parson and Gold were strong characters. Parson was the leader in this story. I can’t imagine being in their situation. Talk about thinking on your feet while under

The Princeling

The queen has passed away and Princess Elizabeth has claimed the throne. Elizabeth received little to no opposition to her becoming queen. With the raise of Queen Elizabeth comes a greater respect for Protestantism as the new religion. There is one family who does feel threatened with this new religion…The Morlands. The Morlands want to bring back Catholicism as the one and only religion. John Morland plans to find a way to keep the Morlands in a place of great power. It won’t be easy as John will have to find some new allies. You never know who is really your ally or enemy. The Princeling is book three in the Morland Dynasty series. I have not read the first two books but it was easy to jump right into this one. While, I like reading about this time period and enjoy the Tudors, I just found that I was middle of the road with this book. The beginning was slow going for me. It took me a while to really start to get into this book. Though, I found this book interesting. I am not that fam

Review Opportunity:New mystery: Sentimental Me

Image
Sun City West, AZ - Oct 14, 2010 - Author Charles L. Fields announces his latest mystery novel, Sentimental Me. Don't let the nostalgic title Sentimental Me fool you. This fast paced travel mystery is a true gem. It takes Boston lawyer, Charles Stone to Agua Prieta, Mexico to see why a slain U.S. Border Patrol Agent made a woman with known Drug Cartel connections the beneficiary of his $500,000 life insurance policy. Stone was often called in by the Franklin Life Insurance Company to investigate what they referred to as "exotic cases." He recently returned from an assignment in Ireland involving the Real IRA and a notorious international arms dealer. Exposing fraudulent activity almost cost him his life. Needing a little R&R, he accepted the retainer and hoped the trip to Arizona and the Mexican border city would not be as dangerous, but nothing Franklin Life assigned him had ever been a "piece of cake". This investigative journey, rich in descriptive side e

Talking with author Sandra Edwards

Again, I want to thank my good friend and fellow reviewer, Nancy for this great interview with author, Sandra Edwards. 1. Where did you get the story idea for Secondary Targets? It seems a unique plotline and I wonder if something in your history brought it to light. Secondary Targets was born from my love of conspiracy theories. I’d always wanted to write one, but I wanted mine to be unfamiliar. It took me about six months to come up with the basic premise of “what would you do if you woke up one day and found out everything you thought you knew about your father turned out to be a lie?” 2. Grace and Eric's story certainly was the basis of Secondary Targets, but Marcus and Cherilyn had their issues as well. What made you make them an interracial couple? Marcus is one of those characters that pops into your head and then tries to overtake the story. At the risk of sounding crazy, I made a deal with him that if he let me tell the story my way, I’d let him save the day. And his respo

Review Opportunity:horror suspense novel: The Redemption of Holly Dobson

Image
Chicago, IL, October 12, 2010 - The Redemption of Holly Dobson, C. Lynn Barton's classic literary novel is thriller, suspense, and horror at its finest. It has been a long time since we've been reminded of the original master's of horror. The Redemption of Holly Dobson paints the portrait of a troubled and abused girl who survives youth only to be confronted with the ultimate decision of good vs. evil. Holly fights her own demons while pursuing love and self-fulfillment through a family of her own. Holly Dobson possesses an understated benevolent evilness. She is relentlessly driven by her unbreakable sense of family values. Holly acts with remorseless conviction to protect her own regardless of the consequences. Her only son is a demonic, charismatic, and curiously engaging being. The quintessential evil which George Dobson personifies sets Holly on a path that spans continents, decades, and the landscape of her very soul. Along the way, Holly discovers her purpose and fin

This book was so good that I forgot that I was sitting at my computer reading a full length novel. Though

Today’s Top Ten List: My Favorite Ways of Procrastinating 1. Cleaning my kitchen. There is something comforting about creating order and I really do get good ideas while washing pots, I swear. (thirty minutes) 2. Ditto: folding laundry (15 minutes, unless I raid my teenaged daughter’s room and scoop up the scattered pants and shirts from the floor) 3. Planting flowers and pulling up weeds. It feels good to create places of beauty, however small and humble. (long summer afternoon…winter afternoons can be spent dreaming over plant catalogues) 4. Reading junky magazines while pedaling stationary bike at the gym. That’s how I keep up with the Kardashians, Brangelina and Jen, Suri Cruise’s latest outfit. (thirty minutes is all I can take, both of exercise and celebrity gossip) 5. Sharpening ten pencils, even though I write on a laptop. (five minutes, while I speculate, sadly, on the possible future obsolescence of the pencil) 6. Asking my teenaged daughter to clean up her room. (that’s at l

Holt is raising his nephew and niece. The last thing on Holt’s mind is having a romantic relationship with any woman, especially Sharlene. Though when the fire works start up…watch out! I have enjoyed all the books in this series, though I have to admit that the past couple of books were missing the spark that I loved so much about these books. I am happy to report that the spark is back and better then ever in Carolyn Brown’s latest, Honky Tonk Christmas. Sharlene and Holt are a match made in honky tonk heaven. Holt is the hot, sexy guy with the hea

Perfection by Julie Metz

Henry kept a secret from her for two years. Now Julie must pick up the pieces again and figure out what she is going to do with this new information about her husband. The man she loved and thought she knew everything about. I did not know what to expect from this book when I first picked it up to start reading it. I didn’t fell sorry for Julie, which in my opinion is a good thing. She was not a victim but a survivor. She is a strong woman, though Julie wasn’t very strong

Elizabeth, Captive Princess

King Henry VIII is dead. King Edward is lying in his bed about to die as well. Who will reign next? It was thought that Lady Jane Grey would but she has been executed. Now, it is between Mary and Elizabeth. Elizabeth knows she will be a better Queen than Mary. Unfortunately because Mary is the older of the two, it makes sense that Mary would be the next Queen. Of course, Mary does becomes Queen. Though not a lot of people are happy about it. There is a plot to get Mary out of the throne. Mary is stubborn and won’t give up the throne easily. Elizabeth is conniving and is trying to find a way to overthrow Mary. Will she succeed? Elizabeth, Captive Princess is book two in the Elizabeth I trilogy. I read the first book, Young Bess because I was interested in getting to know Elizabeth better. A lot of the books about the Tudors is about King Henry VIII, his wife Anne, his daughter Mary and his son, Edward but there are not a lot of books about Elizabeth. I think she is overlooked. She is v

Eric makes things a bit uncomfortable for Sadie when he invites her to come down with him. Sadie must decide whether to go with Eric or say home with her sheriff boyfriend, Pete Cunningham. Oh what is a girl to do! Key Lime Pie is the fourth Sadie Hoffmiller novel. I believe this book can be read as a stand alone novel. There are a few references made about what transpired in the prior novel but nothing that won’t trip up the readers from jumping right into this book. It is the second novel I have read by Mrs. Kilpack. I really love Sadie. She is such a busybody but at the same time she is so sweet that you can forgive her for being in everyone’s business. I want to thank you for allowing me this interview. I read your bio and I see that you were into reading and romances at a very young age. What type of romances did you like to read…romantic suspense, romantic comedy, historical romance, etc? Both are huge stress relievers for me! QUESTION: What is one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you? LOUISA: Hmm.
